![]() There are alumni teams for all of the other teams barring the Vegas Golden Knights too. ![]() ![]() If you were a fan of old school teams like the Quebec Nordiques, Hartford Whalers or Minnesota North Stars, you can use them here. One other small thing of note is the ability to play with alumni teams. The presentation is very well done and lifelike. Occasionally you will run into some repeating lines but at the very least, James Cybulski and Ray Ferraro sound very energetic and the commentary doesn’t sound like it was recorded in a studio. The commentary is some of the most immersive you’ll find in a hockey game. It can take a while to purchase stuff in this mode without it. Hockey Ultimate Team mode currency can be pricey especially if cash is tight. If you want to play online and you have a Playstation Plus membership, play something like NHL Threes or Ones. You’ll need to buy some packs with real money in order to have much of a chance of success in this mode, especially against non computer opponents. It can be tough to win if you don’t have good enough players. This is the mode to go to if you are looking to build a team and collect stuff. Lastly, there is Hockey Ultimate Team mode. Even better, once you’ve unlocked these mascots and heroes you can use them in exhibition mode in Threes anytime. These conditions get tougher as you go along but are worth the effort. Threes has a circuit mode where you can take a mediocre team and make it better by unlocking mascots and “heroes” by meeting certain conditions. During these modes, you can play on outdoor rinks in addition to regular arenas. Ones is a three way battle to see which player can score on the goalie the most in a certain time. Threes is where three players and a goalie from each team battle it out in short 2 to 3 minute periods. If you like arcade style hockey, there are NHL Threes and NHL Ones modes. I only recommend this mode if you have time to invest in it consistently. You can also relocate teams wherever you like and so much more. You can use any teams in the game or make your own expansion team. If you are the kind of person that likes to handle every detail of a team, there is always Franchise mode. You can do an entire season or just try for the Stanley Cup with your favorite team. If you have a working internet connection, you can update the rosters constantly throughout the season so you can play with rosters that closely mirror the real life NHL but you can move players to any roster you want to and make your own rosters. You also have control over your strategies and rosters. You can decide if there’ll be penalties, fighting, icing and off-sides. Score more goals than your opponent to win. Be aware that the challenges where you try to do the latter can be tough, It pays to go through the initial tournaments and NHL draft first because it immerses you into what it is like to be a player. Depending on the choices you make, you can become friendly with teammates or try to steal the show every game. Along the way, you’ll complete challenges that if you win them will make your player more effective on the ice and allow for more customization for your pro. You can start in a tournament, play hockey in Europe or just debut in the NHL from the outset. In this mode you take the role of a rookie trying to make his way to the National Hockey League. The main draw of NHL 21 lies in its’ Be a Pro mode. I recommend using either the NHL 94 or Hybrid style controls because using the Skill Stick can be tricky. It keeps the ease of use of the NHL 94 style but also affords you the opportunity to learn some of the advanced moves if you’d like. The last style is called the Hybrid style. If you do not care about all of the advanced moves in the game and you just want to play hockey, NHL 94 mode is the style for you because you use the directional pad to move, the X button to pass and the Circle button to shoot. This style can be taxing for anyone that is just trying to play for the first time. Skill Stick controls require use of the analog sticks to pull off shooting, passing and deking. NHL 21 has 3 control schemes available, These are known as Skill Stick, NHL 94, and Hybrid. ![]() However it does have a few new wrinkles to keep it interesting should one decide to pick it up. If you have played anything from NHL 18 to NHL 20, you’ve played NHL 21. NHL 21 does indeed have a few surprises in store for the rabid hockey fan if this is your first time playing. The key question it has to answer is whether or not it has enough to set it apart from previous entries to make it worth buying. Every year, EA Sports seeks to top themselves with each edition of their sports franchises.
